Schools across Cork County are taking part in a national programme to help tackle our litter problem with second class in Scoil Phádraig Naofa in Bandon re-launching the ‘Picker Pals’ Programme for this school year.

Major project will encourage cyclists and pedestrians to take to the road in a safe environment

Cork County Council’s Library and Arts Service are delighted to announce a series of Teen Literature, writing, and health advice events offered to secondary school and Youthreach students in Cork County. This exciting new venture to engage young people in Cork County with their local library service will run throughout November 2021. 

Patrick O’Donovan, T.D., Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW), today visited Clonakilty to mark the completion of the Clonakilty Flood Relief Scheme together with the Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Gillian Coughlan, three years after construction works began. They were joined at a ceremony in the old town centre by Cllr. Joe Carroll, Chair of the Municipal Council for West Cork, OPW Chairman Maurice Buckley, members of the local Business Association, and by staff from the OPW, engineering consultants Mott MacDonald and contractors Ward & Burke Ltd, who delivered the design and construction of the scheme respectively.

In order to raise awareness of the need to maintain road side trees and hedges, Cork County Council is reminding landowners that they are obliged, under the Roads Act of 1993, to take all reasonable care to ensure that trees, ditches, hedges and other vegetation growing on their land are not a danger to people using or working on a public road or public footpath. Landowners are also reminded that liability for damage or injury resulting from such hazards will rest with them.

Cork County Council Library and Arts Service has released a collection of short stories, poems and recipes that can be read by, or read to, a person with dementia. The book, called ‘Come Sit Awhile’, hopes to support reminiscing. It includes articles from Ireland’s Own, works by local historians and family recipes from a well-known Irish chef.

A new art exhibition, featuring 30 paintings and drawings by Bantry based artist Catherine Weld, is set to open at Cork County Council’s Library HQ Gallery. The solo collection, called ‘Fragile Island’, will run for four weeks from Friday, October 29th to Friday, November 26th. The artist will also host a free workshop in the gallery in conjunction with the exhibition.

Cork County Council is one of nine local authorities in Ireland to participate in a new initiative aimed at supporting older adults to remain living in their own homes and communities. The Healthy Age Friendly Homes Programme is a two-year project funded by Sláintecare and Age Friendly Ireland. It aims to reach up to 4,500 homes across Ireland during that time.

The Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Gillian Coughlan says the artwork on the ‘Cut and Cover’ railway tunnel in Monkstown is something the entire community can be proud of.

Primary school pupils from County Cork will soon have the opportunity to meet some of their favourite authors and illustrators as part of the Children’s Book Festival this month.
