Cork County takes a tidy sweep at this years Tidy Towns

A groups of people at an awards ceremony

The Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Danny Collins and the Chief Executive of Cork County Council Tim Lucey have warmly congratulated all the volunteers and tidy towns champions who have make Cork County one of the biggest winners at this year’s Tidy Towns event.

Rosscarbery and Clonakity were awarded Ireland’s tidiest town and Ireland’s tidiest small town.A total of 20 medals were awarded to towns and villages across Cork County with special awards given to Sherkin and Bere Island with the All Island Pollinator Plan and Young Person in Tidy Towns both going to Cobh Tidy Towns.

Commenting on the county’s success, Mayor Collins highlighted how,

I would like to express my thanks to all the volunteers and winners in each of our Tidy Towns groups county wide. I must especially congratulate Rosscarbery and Clonakilty on their amazing success. The efforts of all our communities is incredible and inspiring. Their dedication and personal sacrifice have made County Cork a cleaner and more beautiful place to live. I look forward to seeing Cork County Council continue to work alongside Tidy Towns groups from around the county and support them in any way we can.

In the 64th year of the annual event and the first full scale ceremony since the pandemic, judges had the difficult task of selecting winners from what was the third highest amount of entrants. Participating in the competition requires a huge amount of effort by volunteers, who by giving up their own time, help to build community relations and foster a sense of pride in their communities. These efforts build better and more inclusive communities, not only for those that reside there but for tourists, for visitors and for the business community. Participation is encouraged at every level, through schools, businesses, public bodies and the individual.

Chief Executive of Cork County Council Tim Lucey went on to say,

This success is down to the incredible efforts made by all to achieve such remarkable results. I have witnessed first-hand the differences that can be made with participation in the Tidy Towns. The results are much more than what we see but the real success is evident with community spirit and a shared sense of pride. Congratulations to all the entrants, special award winners, medalists and especially well done to Rosscarbery and Clonakilty.
