Stranger than Fiction: Online Non-fiction Events Series - Fiona Sampson MBE FRSL

Cork County Council Library and Arts Service is delighted to announce a series of free online events with authors this April and May.

On Monday 19th May, acclaimed poet, writer and translator Fiona Sampson MBE FRSL will discuss her book In search of Mary Shelley: the girl who wrote Frankenstein with Sasha de Buyl.

Fiona Sampson sifts through letters, diaries and records to find the Mary Shelley behind the story. She uncovers a complex, generous character – friend, intellectual, lover and mother – trying to fulfil her own passionate commitment to writing at a time when to be a woman writer was an extraordinary and costly anomaly.

A former professional violinist, Fiona has a PhD in applied philosophy of language and is presently Senior Research Fellow, Harris Manchester College University of Oxford. Sasha de Buyl is a writer and programmer working in Scotland and Cork. Their writing has appeared in The Stinging Fly, Irish Times and the anthology Nasty Women. They have programmed Cúirt International Festival of Literature, International Festival of Literature Dublin and StAnza, Scotland’s international poetry festival.

This programme is supported by Cork County Council and the Arts Council.
