Olympic Gold Medallist Fintan McCarthy Inspires West Cork Students to Dream Big at Entrepreneurial Event
Over 300 transition year students from eleven schools across West Cork gathered at the Celtic Ross Hotel in Rosscarbery for the “Igniting Entrepreneurship” event, hosted by the Local Enterprise Office Cork North and West. Designed to inspire the region’s young minds, the event featured double Olympic gold medallist Fintan McCarthy and his brother Jake, both international rowing champions, who shared their stories of resilience and success.
In a conversation with Kevin Curran, Head of Enterprise, the McCarthy brothers discussed the importance of hard work, patience, and persistence in overcoming obstacles. “Success isn’t a straight path—it’s full of setbacks, but with focus and determination, you can overcome anything,” said Fintan. Their journey served as a powerful reminder to students that with dedication, no dream is too big and no challenge insurmountable.
In addition to the McCarthy brothers, students heard from past programme winners DJS Engineering, whose innovative farm equipment holder earned them a national award earlier this year. Shannen O’Reilly, founder of TrustDish, captivated the audience with her digital allergen management solution, which supports both food businesses in hospitality and individuals with allergies. By simplifying allergen tracking and communication, TrustDish showcases the power of innovation in solving real-world challenges. O’Reilly’s journey reinforced the importance of persistence, creativity, and a focus on customer needs in driving business success.
Representatives from the Intellectual Property Office of Ireland also spoke, focusing on the importance of protecting innovation through patents, copyright, and intellectual property. Their message emphasized how safeguarding original ideas is essential for any aspiring entrepreneur.
