Funding Available for the protection of County Cork’s Heritage

Cork County Council is inviting owners and custodians to apply for funding to safeguard protected structures and archaeological monuments in County Cork through three funding streams recently announced for 2023; the Community Monuments Fund, the Built Heritage Investment Scheme and the Historic Structures Fund.

Fermoy Library Launches ‘My Open Library’ Out of Hours Service

Fermoy Library has launched a new addition to its service that will enable borrowers to access the library outside of the usual hours of operation.  ‘My Open Library’ offers extended opening hours to library members on a self-service basis outside of normal opening hours, seven days per week, from 8:00am to 10:00pm, 365 days per year.

Poetry as Commemoration – Poetry Jukebox comes to Cobh

Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Danny Collins has joined Cobh Municipal District in warmly welcomed the temporary installation of a Poetry Jukebox on Cobh Promenade as part of UCD’s Poetry as Commemoration programme. Developed by Dr. Catherine Wilsdon under the national Decade of Centenaries programme 2012-2023, members of the public will be able to hear works by well-known poets including Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, John Hewitt and W.B. Yeats, as well as lesser-known writers such as D.L. Kelleher, Alice Milligan and Agnes Kerr.

New appeal for County Cork properties to house Ukrainian people

Cork County Council is appealing to those who have unoccupied properties to offer them as temporary homes for those fleeing war in Ukraine. The call is part of a new government initiative to make use of unoccupied houses, apartments or holiday homes to house Ukrainian people and families.

C Pens Available to Borrow at Cork County Libraries

Cork County Council’s Library and Arts Service has announced that C-Pens are now available to borrow from any of their branch and mobile libraries. The reader pens scan text and read it aloud to assist with independent reading and are the latest offering in an inclusive range of literacy supports designed to be user-friendly and intuitive, regardless of the user’s age or digital experience.

Cork’s ‘One County, One Book 2022’ Celebrated at Vertigo

Cork County Council Library and Arts Service has chosen ‘Not My Problem’ by Ciara Smyth as the ‘One County, One Book’ read for teens and young Adults for 2022. The Council’s ‘One County, One Book’ initiative is designed to promote homegrown literature, with prominent placement in its branches, and to promote literacy as part of its community outreach programmes to young people.
