Libraries throughout Cork County are taking part in Ireland Reads, a campaign to get the whole country reading this month in the lead up to a national day of reading on Saturday, February 24th.

Cork County Council Library and Arts Service is accepting submissions to the From the Well Short Story competition 2024. The competition invites entries from writers aged 18 and over who are registered members of any library. From the Well is a long standing short story anthology published annually by Cork County Council’s Library and Arts Service.

The Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Frank O’Flynn and Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys TD, have officially opened Kinsale’s new library and Ballydesmond’s Pocket Park. 

Cork County Council LHQ Gallery will host ‘Emotion’, an exhibition by artist Ciara Chapman, that looks at human emotion, change and growth. The exhibition opens on Thursday, October 26th and will run until November 24th, with an opening event on Saturday, October 28th from 11am to 12.30pm. Entrance to the exhibition and the opening event are free of charge.

oday, at the National Radon Forum, the EPA and Cork County Council’s Library and Arts Service launched a library loan scheme of digital radon monitors and is calling on householders in County Cork to take the first step to protect themselves and their families from radon, a cancer-causing radioactive gas.   Many areas in County Cork are at high risk - with one in five homes in those areas likely to have high levels of radon.

To celebrate Cork County Cuts Carbon – Make One Change month this November, Cork County Council Library & Arts Service would like to invite you to design a library card that celebrates sustainability. The winning design will feature on our new adult membership cards. The successful entrant will also receive a €150 voucher. There will also be 2 runner-up prizes of €25.

Cork County Council’s Library and Arts Service is inviting all children due to start school this September to visit their local library and collect their free “Little Library Book Bag”.

County Cork is one of eight locations taking part in The Rainbow Library, a pioneering publishing initiative to create more books for young readers that include LGBTQ+ identities and experiences. 

Cork County Council’s Library and Arts Service at Youghal Library has received a wonderful gift of 330 books in the Ukrainian language, generously donated by people in Kyiv, Ukraine and Bratislava in Slovakia. The collection includes a mix of adult books and children’s books, many of which are popular favourites.

On April 2nd the usually closed doors of ‘The Coal Shed’ in Fermoy will open to the public, revealing “To The Letter” an exhibition commissioned as part of Cork County Council’s Commemorations Programme.
