Charleville embarks on Age Friendly Plans

Following the Council’s call for applications for funding for potential Age Friendly Towns, four new towns have successfully joined the existing Age Friendly network of Bandon, Cobh, Kinsale and Mitchelstown. Examples of age friendly initiatives implemented in participating towns include accessible public seating, promotion of age friendly businesses, age friendly parking and other public realm enhancements.

The Cork Age Friendly County Programme aims to support the development of a network of Age Friendly towns across County Cork and the current funding cycle from 2020 – 2021 will provide financial assistance to the towns of Bantry, Millstreet, Charleville and Passage West and Monkstown.

Chair of Kanturk Mallow Municipal District, Cllr. Pat Hayes welcomed the allocation of funding for Age Friendly initiatives in Charleville.

‘’I am delighted to welcome funding and successful entry to Cork County Council’s Age Friendly Programme in Charleville.  Charleville has a very active retired community, many of whom volunteer for the local Tidy Towns and many other organisations.  I envisage that this Age Friendly Programme, through Cork County Council and working with local representatives, will reap many benefits for the town and make it a great town to grow older in’’

Niall Healy, Director of Services and Chair of Cork County Age Friendly Alliance congratulated Charleville on their success in securing the funding and noted that there was significant interest in the Council’s 2020 – 2021 Age Friendly Towns Programme;

‘Cork County Council received huge levels of interest in the 2020/2021 Age Friendly Programme.  Great work has already been undertaken by the Age Friendly Town Committees in Bandon, Cobh, Kinsale and Mitchelstown. We are looking forward to working with the four new towns and welcome Charleville in its journey towards achieving Age Friendly Town status.’
