Cork County Council Library and Arts Service Celebrates St. Patrick's Day
Library branches across the county will decorate their windows, with two very special window displays in Bandon and Mitchelstown Libraries.
Bandon Library will be working in partnership with Bandon Brownies this March to help them achieve their all-important Book Lover’s Badge. Although Covid restrictions have made achieving this Journey Badge a little different this year, Bandon Brownies have risen to the challenge by getting creative, designing colourful posters that will decorate the Library windows. Colourful, imaginative scenes from some of the books they have loved, drawings of their favourite literary characters, and pictures describing what it is that they love about their local Library will form part of the artwork on display.
Bandon Brownies traditionally march in the local St. Patrick’s Day parade which cannot take place this year. Instead, one of the Brownies Leaders living locally will film the route for the troupe and the exhibition in the Library’s windows will play a key feature. The exhibition will be on display until April 10th.
Mitchelstown Library Writers Group, who meet virtually every Friday, have submitted short stories for a window display in Mitchelstown Library. The stories include fond recollections of Irish culture, tradition, song and dance through the years in North Cork and beyond. The short stories will be exhibited for the month of March.
The Council’s Library Service will also deliver a series of videos by Manchan Magan, based on his book “Thirty-Two Words for Field’ as well as a podcast by the Local Studies Department, all about St. Patrick.
Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr. Mary Linehan Foley welcomed these alternative celebrations saying,
“Bandon Brownies and the Mitchelstown reading group are two examples of the many ways in which communities throughout the county have used creativity to continue to support one another. It has been truly inspirational to see residents both young and old find new ways to come together and share in our heritage. I invite everyone to celebrate creativity, community and heritage for this year’s Seachtain na Gaeilge and St. Patrick’s Day. Although we have experienced many challenges over the past year, we have much to celebrate and brighter days ahead to look forward to.”
Craft packs for children can be requested to accompany our recent video showing you how to make a St. Patrick’s Day wreath. To avail of a pack, email corkcountylibrary@corkcoco.ie.

Ceiliúrann Seirbhís Leabharlainne agus Ealaíon Chomhairle Contae Chorcaí Lá Fhéile Pádraig
Leanann Seirbhís Leabharlainne agus Ealaíon Chomhairle Contae Chorcaí ag marcáil Seachtain na Gaeilge, ag críochnú le réimse gníomhaíochtaí do Lá Fhéile Pádraig i gContae Chorcaí.
Maiseoidh brainsí leabharlainne ar fud an chontae a gcuid fuinneoga, le dhá thaispeántas fuinneoige ana-speisialta i Leabharlanna Dhroichead na Bandan agus Bhaile Mhistéala.
Beidh Leabharlann Dhroichead na Bandan ag obair i gcomhpháirtíocht le Bandon Brownies i mí an Mhárta seo chun cabhrú leo a suaitheantas ana-thábhachtach 'Book Lover' a bhaint amach. Cé go bhfuil dúshlán do na Brownies a Suaitheantas Turais seo a bhaint amach i mbliana de bharr srianta Covid tá siad ag tabhairt aghaidh ar an dúshlán trí phóstaeir ildaite a chruthú agus a dhearadh le fuinneoga na Leabharlainne a mhaisiú. Beidh radhairc ildaite, samhlaíocha ó chuid de na leabhair a raibh grá acu dóibh, líníochtaí de na carachtair liteartha is fearr leo, agus pictiúir ag cur síos ar a bhfuil grá acu dá Leabharlann áitiúil mar chuid den saothar ealaíne atá ar taispeáint.
Go traidisiúnta bíonn Bandon Brownies ag máirseáil sa pharáid áitiúil Lá Fhéile Pádraig nach féidir a reáchtáil i mbliana. Ina áit sin, déanfaidh duine de na Ceannairí Brownies atá ina chónaí go háitiúil an bealach a scannánú don trúpa agus beidh an taispeántas i bhfuinneoga na Leabharlainne ina príomhghné. Beidh an taispeántas ar taispeáint go dtí an 10ú Aibreán.
Chuir Grúpa Scríbhneoirí Leabharlann Bhaile Mhistéala, a thagann le chéile beagnach gach Aoine, gearrscéalta isteach le haghaidh taispeáint ar fhuinneoga Leabharlann Bhaile Mhistéala. I measc na scéalta tá cuimhní ar chultúr, traidisiún, amhráin agus damhsaí na hÉireann trí na blianta i gCorcaigh Thuaidh. Taispeánfar na gearrscéalta le linn Mí an Mhárta.
Seachadfaidh Seirbhís Leabharlainne na Comhairle sraith físeán le Manchán Magan, bunaithe ar a leabhar “Thirty-Two Words for Field’ chomh maith le podchraoladh ón Roinn Staidéar Áitiúil, faoi Naomh Pádraig.
D’fháiltigh Méara Chontae Chorcaí, an Clr. Mary Linehan Foley roimh an gceiliúradh difriúil seo ag rá,
“Is samplaí iad Bandon Brownies agus grúpa léitheoireachta Bhaile Mhistéala den iliomad bealaí inar bhain pobail ar fud an chontae úsáid as cruthaitheacht chun tacú lena chéile. Tá sé fíor-inspioráideach cónaitheoirí idir óg agus aosta a fheiscint ag teacht le chéile lenár n-oidhreacht a cheiliúradh ar bhealaí nua do Sheachtain na Gaeilge agus Lá Fhéile Pádraig i mbliana. Cé go raibh go leor dúshlán romhainn le bliain anuas, tá go leor le ceiliúradh againn agus laethanta níos gile romhainn sa todhchaí. "
Is féidir pacáistí ceardaíochta do leanaí a iarraidh le dul in éineacht lenár bhfíseán nua a thaispeánann duit conas fleasc Lá Fhéile Pádraig a dhéanamh. Chun pacáiste a fháil, seol ríomhphost chuig corkcountylibrary@corkcoco.ie.
