Cork County Council has announced significant energy upgrades for the Fermoy Swimming Pool that will not only enhance the swimming experience but also ensure a more sustainable future. The pool is set to become more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly thanks to a series of improvements.

The upgrades, which include the installation of solar panels, as well as an energy-efficient water heater and gas boiler, are aimed at reducing the facility's carbon footprint while also improving the comfort and experience of swimmers and patrons.

Welcoming the upgrade of the much-cherished community facility, the Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Frank O’Flynn said

Fermoy Swimming Pool has always been a hub of community activity and enjoyment, and these energy upgrades mark an important step towards a greener and more sustainable future. By investing in these improvements, we are not only reducing our environmental impact but also ensuring that our residents and visitors have access to a top-quality swimming facility for generations to come.

Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Tim Lucey added,

Swimming pool sports complexes operate differently to more traditional buildings and have very specific energy requirements that must be maintained for both the protection of the building fabric and the comfort of patrons. The energy-efficient enhancements at Fermoy Swimming Pool will lead to a reduced environmental impact and significant cost savings while futureproofing the pool facilities and providing a more comfortable and enjoyable swimming experience for all.

Fermoy Swimming Pool was originally constructed in the 1970s and was redeveloped in 1996. The number of users is in the region of 150,000 per year, including many local clubs and schools. The pool is also home to Fermoy Swimming Club, offers a Swimming Learning Programme for adults and children and regularly hosts swimming galas.
