Ghosts of Babylon at Library Headquarters
Ghosts of Babylon initially began during Ungerer’s residency at the Uillinn West Cork Art Centre in 2020, at a time that coincided with the first Covid-19 lockdown. Much of Ungerer’s work looks at peripheral landscapes on the margins or urban development and rural hinterlands. This exhibition brings together some of his most recent paintings where he focuses on empty, liminal landscapes.
Welcoming the exhibition, Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Gillian Coughlan said, “Cork County Council’s Library Service plays a vital role in enriching the lives of the people of Cork. It provides opportunities for learning and connection, and the LHQ gallery allows us to celebrate artistic talent and to enhance our understanding of the world around us. This exhibition is an opportunity not only to celebrate a Cork based artist, but also to reflect on the landscape and how we connect with it. I would encourage all to visit and to remember to observe Covid-19 guidelines while enjoying the exhibition.”
Deputy Chief Executive of Cork County Council, James Fogarty noted, “Cork County Council is proud to support the Arts and the artistic community. Many grant schemes and residency programmes serve to provide economic supports to artists and opportunities for members of the public to meaningfully engage with the Arts. The LHQ gallery has consistently provided a venue for this to happen, and this latest exhibition illustrates how the Arts can enrich life in Cork County."
Visitors to the exhibition are asked to wear a mask and maintain social distancing. Eleven people are permitted in the gallery at any one time: this is subject to change in line with Government guidelines.
Ghosts of Babylon will run from the 6th to the 28th September, 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday (closed 1pm – 2pm daily), at LHQ Gallery, Cork County Hall.
